Unofficial guide — always verify track conditions, closures, fees and safety with NSW National Parks. Place photos are Wikimedia Commons / CC where credited — not official NPWS imagery and not live conditions.

Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park entry fees and NSW National Parks camping bookings are never affiliated.

The most expensive mistake at this park is not the $8 fee. It is being at the bottom of Somersby Falls when the car park locks. Official park pages state the hours in plain English. Build them into the walk plan.

Set a reverse clock before anyone starts down: time to climb out, plus a margin, plus M1 home. The only way out of the falls is the steps you came down.

What stays open

NPWS: other areas of Brisbane Water National Park will be open at all times, however may have to close for poor weather or fire danger. Lookouts can still be a Plan B after picnic lock — do not assume a second waterfall car park is still open.

The reverse clock

If picnic close is 6pm, you are not starting down Somersby at 5:20. Grade 3 steps take longer on the way up, especially with kids or after rain. Set an alarm for the turnaround, not the lock time.

Girrakool is the same pattern

Girrakool picnic area uses the same hours. Two car parks, two locks. Combining both walks in one morning only works if you left early enough that both reverse clocks still have air.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

What if I get locked in?

Don’t invent a bush exit. That is why you leave enough time. For emergencies call 000 — you need mobile reception. Official picnic hours are how you avoid the problem.

Do both picnic areas lock?

Yes. Girrakool and Somersby Falls picnic areas both use 7am–8pm daylight saving / 7am–6pm otherwise. Car parks lock at close. Verify live on NPWS.
