Half day

Lookouts + picnic (low-step day)

Best for: Groups who want views without a staircase waterfall

Staples and/or Warrah lookouts, picnic tables, optional Patonga food. Honest Plan B when falls car parks are full.

If anyone cannot do Somersby steps, this is still a good day — not a failed visit. Staples is inland sandstone; Warrah looks toward Broken Bay and Barrenjoey Head.

Do not pull over on the motorway for a photo. Signed parking only. Unfenced edges, sun and wind. Picnic tables at Staples. Optional Patonga food after Warrah — still carry walk water.

Lookouts may stay open when Girrakool and Somersby picnic car parks lock — they can still close for weather or fire danger. Verify on NPWS.

Verify before you leave. Track status, weather, fees and closures change — check NSW National Parks and park alerts, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

Times are planning anchors, not a race clock. Protect the reverse drive home.

  1. Night before

    Check the sky

Warrah needs a clear day. Screenshot alerts. Pack hat, water, SPF.

  2. Morning

    Staples Lookout

Easy views, picnic tables, edge discipline. Signed park only.

  3. Late morning

    Warrah Lookout

Broken Bay / Barrenjoey Head on a clear day. Wind can be sharp.

  4. Optional

    Patonga food

Village lunch after the views — not a substitute for water on the lookout.

Extra tips

Honesty

  • This is Plan B when stairs or parking fail — say that out loud so nobody feels cheated.
  • Cycling loops nearby are official NPWS trails, not this day’s default.
