- Time: 2–4 hours

Getting there
Drive & access notes
Girrakool Road, Somersby — M1 / Wisemans Ferry Road corridor, not the Somersby Falls car park.
Vehicle entry fees often apply in Brisbane Water fee areas — confirm live amounts and payment (machines / Park'nPay / passes) on official pages. Hide valuables; busy trailheads attract theft.
Picnic base with a real loop
Girrakool is the “stay for lunch” node. The loop is short enough for mixed groups and still Grade 3. The engraving site at the start is the respect test for the whole park: look, do not walk on it.
NPWS Girrakool office is listed at 59 Girrakool Rd for official enquiries — not a visitor centre with retail hours you should assume. Use the Contact Centre / official park page for live help.
This is a separate car park from Somersby Falls. Same lock-time pattern, different road. Mixing the two in a GPS is how groups lose 20 minutes they needed for the climb back.
Loop, lookouts, optional upgrade
Official loop: about 2 km, Grade 3, 30 minutes to 1 hour. Illoura and Andamira are the named lookout stops — Andamira for the shady waterfall, Illoura for the view. NPWS calling it “short and easy” still means steps, not a promenade.
Piles Creek Loop is the usual upgrade from the same picnic hub — official NPWS: 4 km loop, Grade 5, 2.5–3 hours. Still not a Great North Walk day. Only add it if the 2 km felt honestly easy and lock time is hours away.
Engraving site — path only
The Aboriginal rock engraving site at the start of the loop is why this precinct is more than a BBQ. Stay on the viewing path. If the platform is busy, wait. If a child steps on the art, stop the group and reset. Darkinjung Country — this guide does not speak for Traditional Owners.
