Getting there

Drive & access notes

From Sydney ~70 km north via M1; from Gosford ~10–12 km west via Wisemans Ferry Road. Weekend traffic on the M1 is real — build a buffer.

Vehicle entry fees often apply in Brisbane Water fee areas — confirm live amounts and payment (machines / Park'nPay / passes) on official pages. Hide valuables; busy trailheads attract theft.

Why this is the front door

Somersby Falls is why most Sydney day-trippers come: a short, photogenic waterfall with picnic tables minutes from the M1. It is also why the precinct feels busy. An early start, grip shoes, and leaving before closing time beat adding Mt Wondabyne onto the same first visit.

The walking track is not wheelchair accessible. The picnic area has accessible parking and facilities — confirm on the official picnic page.

Treat this precinct as one honest waterfall plus a picnic, not a checklist to finish the whole park before lunch. If the group still has energy after the climb out, Girrakool is a separate car park with its own lock time — not a 10-minute add-on down the same road.

The waterfall walk that actually fits

Official NPWS figures: 0.8 km return, 30–36 minutes, Grade 3. Distance is short; steps are the grade. Lookouts take in three cascade levels. Return the same way — it is not a loop, and there is no shuttle from the bottom.

After rain the spray looks like the brochure and the sandstone is slick. In a dry spell the cascade is quieter but the rainforest setting still earns the stop. Turn around at any lookout if anyone is slow, empty of water, or you are inside 90 minutes of lock time.

Fees, lock times, reception

Hours: 7am–8pm daylight saving, 7am–6pm otherwise. The car park locks at close. Vehicle fee $8/day at machines or Park’nPay, or display a valid NSW Parks Pass — verify live. Other areas of the park may remain open when this picnic area locks, but they can still close for weather or fire danger.

Limited mobile reception in parts of the park. Screenshot alerts. Emergency+ on the phone before you lose signal. 000 still needs reception.
