Brisbane Water walks & lookouts
Guide updated · grades and open status change — verify NSW National Parks
Start with a clear waterfall vs picnic loop vs lookout choice. Somersby Falls or Girrakool covers most first visits; a Great North Walk section needs a train or two-car plan. Distances, grades and times below are planning figures — always confirm on NSW National Parks and park alerts. Weather, fees and track status change.
Decide before you lace up
- Signature waterfall: Somersby Falls — 0.8 km return, Grade 3, many steps, picnic lock times.
- Picnic loop + culture: Girrakool Loop — 2 km, engraving site (path only), lookouts, BBQ base.
- Easy views: Staples or Warrah — Plan B when stairs or waterfall parking fail.
- Harder / longer: Piles Creek from Girrakool (4 km loop, Grade 5), or a planned Wondabyne–Patonga Great North Walk day (23 km one-way, Grade 4) — one hero only, not a Somersby add-on.
Stacking Somersby, Girrakool and Mt Wondabyne on a late Sydney start is the classic first-visit failure. Pick the table row that matches energy, then open the full walk guide for start points and hazards.

Easy
Lookouts and shorter stops — still take edges and heat seriously.
Staples Lookout
easyBest for: Low-effort views, Plan B when waterfall car parks are full
Easy-access lookout with picnic tables and sandstone country views. A legitimate Plan B when Somersby or Girrakool parking is full — not a substitute for the waterfall walk if that was the day’s point.

Warrah Lookout
easyBest for: Broken Bay / Barrenjoey Head views, photography
Lookout toward Broken Bay and Barrenjoey Head — the “estuary and headland” face of a park most visitors only see as a waterfall. Pair with Warrah Trig cycling loop only if you came to ride.
- Grade
- Easy lookout
- Time
- 20–45 minutes

- Short lookout stop

Bulgandry
easyBest for: Respectful engraving-site visit, culture-first hour
Declared Aboriginal Place protecting rock engravings on Hawkesbury sandstone, including the figure known as Bulgandry Man. This is a respect stop, not a playground or drone set. Stay on the viewing path. Do not walk on or touch engravings.

- Short signed site walk

Moderate
Piles Creek and Great North Walk sections — water, sun and a turnaround time matter.
Somersby Falls
moderateBest for: First-visit waterfall, families with sure feet, after-rain spray
The park’s signature short walk: rainforest steps from Somersby Falls picnic area down past lookouts on three cascade levels to the bottom of the falls, then the same way back. Short distance, real steps, locked car park at close.

- Grade 3
- Time
- 30–36 minutes

Girrakool Loop
moderateBest for: Family picnic + culture + lookouts, first longer sample
Short loop from Girrakool picnic area past an Aboriginal rock engraving site (do not walk on it), bushland, waterfalls and Illoura, Bundilla and Andamira lookouts. The shady waterfall at Andamira is the photo stop people remember.

Harder days
Piles Creek
hardBest for: Waterfalls, rock overhangs, suspension-bridge interest
A more challenging loop from the Girrakool side through dry eucalypt forest along Piles Creek, passing waterfalls and a suspension bridge. Treat it as the next step after Girrakool Loop, not something to add in heat on a first visit.

- 2 hrs 30 min – 3 hrs

Wondabyne–Patonga
hardBest for: Fit walkers, train-in at Wondabyne, Mt Wondabyne views
Great North Walk country through the park: Wondabyne railway station (no road access) toward Patonga, with optional Mt Wondabyne (highest point, big views). This is not the picnic-area day. Limited reception, heat and navigation matter more here than Somersby closing times — plan it as a real bushwalk.

- Grade 4
- Time
- 8–9 hours (full day; not a Somersby add-on)
- Distance
- 23 km one-way

Patonga–Pearl Beach
hardBest for: Southern park, village-to-village, Great North Walk sample
Great North Walk / park-edge walking between Patonga and Pearl Beach. Official NPWS: 3 km one-way, Grade 5, 1.5–2 hours. Village food at the ends; still a real track in the middle. Not a substitute for Somersby Falls.

Walk FAQs
Tap a question to expand the answer.
What is the best first walk in Brisbane Water?
Most first-timers choose Somersby Falls (0.8 km return, Grade 3, many steps) or Girrakool Loop (2 km, engravings + lookouts). A Great North Walk section is a full planned day, not an automatic first-visit extra. Always verify track status with NSW National Parks.
How hard is Somersby Falls?
Official figures: Grade 3, 0.8 km return, 30–36 minutes. Distance is short; steps are the grade. Verify live on NSW National Parks.
Can I do Somersby Falls and Girrakool in one day?
Yes as a full morning if you leave early and respect both picnic lock times. They are separate car parks. Do not add Mt Wondabyne onto the same first visit.
Are dogs allowed on Brisbane Water tracks?
No. Domestic pets are not allowed in Brisbane Water National Park (except certified assistance animals). Confirm current rules on the official NSW National Parks park page.
When do picnic car parks lock?
Girrakool and Somersby Falls picnic areas: 7am–8pm daylight saving / 7am–6pm otherwise. Car parks lock at close. Other areas may stay open but can close for weather or fire danger — verify on NPWS.
