Piles Creek loop

A more challenging loop from the Girrakool side through dry eucalypt forest along Piles Creek, passing waterfalls and a suspension bridge. Treat it as the next step after Girrakool Loop, not something to add in heat on a first visit.

  • Grade 5
  • 2 hrs 30 min – 3 hrs
  • 4 km loop
  • Effort: hard
  • Best for: Waterfalls, rock overhangs, suspension-bridge interest

Where you start

Girrakool picnic area / Piles Creek signed access

Commonly walked from the Girrakool picnic hub. Official NPWS (checked Aug 2026): 4 km loop, Grade 5, 2.5–3 hours. Confirm signed trailhead, live figures and any flood-related closures on the official Piles Creek loop page before you start.

How to get there

  1. Same vehicle approach as Girrakool picnic area. Pay the vehicle day fee. Respect picnic-area lock times if you parked there.
  2. Screenshot the official track page — creek sections can change after heavy rain.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Do Girrakool Loop first if anyone is new to the park — then decide if Piles Creek is still a good idea.
  2. Expect uneven track, creek context and a suspension bridge. Grip shoes, water, and a turnaround time.
  3. NPWS snapshot (checked 12 Sep 2026): the western loop between the suspension bridge and Bundilla Lookout may be closed for rockfall works — the full 4 km loop is not a given. Verify the official Piles Creek loop alerts page.
  4. Do not treat overhangs as playgrounds. Stay on the formed track.

Who this walk is for

Piles Creek is the next step after Girrakool Loop: more waterfall and overhang time, still based at the same picnic hub. It is for groups who already found the 2 km loop honestly easy and still have hours before lock time.

It is the wrong add-on in heat after a late start, or for anyone who struggled on Girrakool steps. Official NPWS figures (checked Aug 2026): 4 km loop, Grade 5, 2.5–3 hours — still verify live on the Piles Creek loop page.

What to expect

Dry eucalypt forest along Piles Creek, waterfalls, rock overhangs and a suspension bridge. Grip shoes, water, and a turnaround time. Creek sections can change after heavy rain — screenshot alerts before you start.

Official loop is 4 km, Grade 5. Stacking it after Girrakool Loop is a longer sandstone day, not a short add-on. Confirm both track pages. Do not treat overhangs as playgrounds.

Grip shoes, water and a rain shell matter on sandstone steps — kit searches live on the gear hub, not as an Amazon wall on this walk page.

Extra tips

  • Official loop is 4 km, Grade 5, 2.5–3 hours. Adding it after the 2 km Girrakool Loop is a longer day — verify both NPWS track pages.
  • After heavy rain, check alerts before committing to creek-side walking.
