Getting there

Drive & access notes

You cannot drive to Wondabyne station. Train request-stop, or start from Patonga by car.

Vehicle entry fees often apply in Brisbane Water fee areas — confirm live amounts and payment (machines / Park'nPay / passes) on official pages. Hide valuables; busy trailheads attract theft.

The longer walk

Day-use dominates visitor experience. GNW sections exist for people who already know how to walk with a map. Overnight pack camping has historically been associated with these routes — check current formal sites and booking rules. Never affiliate camping.

Limited reception matters more here than at Somersby picnic. Emergency+, offline maps, trip intention, optional PLB. 000 still needs reception.

Wondabyne station and Mt Wondabyne

Wondabyne is a railway request-stop with no road access. Confirm train times with Transport NSW before you treat it as a trailhead. Mt Wondabyne is the park’s high point with big views — still a real bushwalk, not a picnic-area add-on after Somersby.

Pick one long walk: Piles Creek from Girrakool, or Wondabyne–Patonga, not both plus a waterfall on a first hot afternoon. Heat in this district has a recorded high of 43.8°C on official visitor-info notes.

Highlights at a glance

Facilities & services

  • Drinking water listed on some GNW visitor-info nodes — do not assume taps at Wondabyne

Can I camp?

The current main NPWS park page does not highlight a drive-in campground. Pack camping has sometimes been linked to Great North Walk sections. Check NSW National Parks. This site never takes a cut from camping bookings.

Can I drive to Wondabyne?

No. Wondabyne is a railway request-stop without road access. Start from Patonga by car, or confirm trains with Transport NSW.

Is this a first-visit walk?

Usually no. Do Somersby or Girrakool first so you know how the group handles steps, heat and lock times. Then plan GNW as its own day.
