3–5 hours

Waterfall + picnic half-day

Best for: Mixed groups who want spray and a BBQ

Somersby Falls walk plus a real picnic — the default Central Coast national-park lunch.

Same waterfall, more table time. Do not skip water on the walk because “lunch is at the top”. The picnic is at the car park, not at the bottom of the falls.

Open fires and solid-fuel burners are prohibited park-wide. Use the provided BBQs. No pets. Pay the $8 vehicle day fee (verify live). Build picnic-area lock time into the reverse clock before anyone walks down the steps.

This is the default Central Coast national-park lunch for mixed groups. It is not a Great North Walk day with a sausage at the end.

Verify before you leave. Track status, weather, fees and closures change — check NSW National Parks and park alerts, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

Times are planning anchors, not a race clock. Protect the reverse drive home.

  1. Night before

    Pack picnic + grip shoes

Reusable plates, water, SPF, rain shell if showers. Screenshot Somersby Falls track page and alerts.

  2. Morning

    Walk first

Steps before the BBQ — legs are fresher going down and up. Turn around at any lookout.

  3. Midday

    Picnic at the top

Use provided BBQs and tables. Open fires and solid fuel are prohibited park-wide.

  4. Leave

    Lock-time margin

Car park locks with picnic hours (7am–8pm DST / 7am–6pm otherwise). Do not linger at the bottom of the falls.

Packing

  • Picnic food + reusable plates

Parking & access tips

  • Arrive before the lunch rush.
  • Have Girrakool or Staples as Plan B if Somersby is full.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Second long walk
  • Piles Creek
  • Mt Wondabyne

Extra tips

Failure modes

  • Walking down thirsty because lunch is “at the top”.
  • Solid-fuel BBQ you brought from home — prohibited.
  • Starting the falls with 40 minutes to lock time.
