Where you start

Somersby Falls picnic area

Start at Somersby Falls picnic area (Somersby Falls Road off the Wisemans Ferry Road / M1 corridor, about 10 km west of Gosford). Accessible parking is signed. Vehicle day-entry fee applies. The picnic area is open 7am–8pm in daylight saving and 7am–6pm at other times — the car park is locked at close.

How to get there

  1. By car from Sydney: M1 (F3) Pacific Motorway north → Central Coast Highway exit → Wisemans Ferry Road toward Somersby Falls access. Sealed 2WD road to the picnic area.
  2. From Gosford: about 10–15 minutes west toward Somersby — do not confuse this with Girrakool (separate picnic area and lock time).
  3. Pay $8 per vehicle per day at machines (card) or via the Park’nPay app, or display a valid NSW Parks Pass — confirm the live amount on NSW National Parks.
  4. Arrive early on weekends, public holidays and after heavy rain — this is one of the busiest short waterfall walks in the Sydney–Central Coast belt.
  5. Do not leave valuables visible. If the car park is full, do not invent verge parking — switch to Girrakool or Staples Lookout as Plan B.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Check NSW National Parks alerts and fire danger before you leave. Screenshot the official track page while you still have signal.
  2. Start at the picnic area, take the formed track with many steps through rainforest, and stop at lookouts that view three levels of cascading falls.
  3. Continue to the bottom of the falls if conditions and feet allow, then return the same way. This is not a loop.
  4. Turn around at any lookout if steps are slick, kids are done, or you are close to lock time.
  5. Finish with picnic/BBQ time only if you still have margin before the car park locks.

Who this walk is for

Choose Somersby Falls when you want the park’s postcard waterfall without a long day. It suits families with sure-footed kids, first-time visitors from Sydney, and anyone who wants rainforest spray plus a picnic — not a Great North Walk through-hike.

It is Grade 3 because of steps and short steep sections, not because of distance. If anyone in the group cannot handle stairs, stay at the picnic area and lookouts you can reach honestly. Do not treat 0.8 km as “basically flat”.

If the group also wants Aboriginal engravings and a longer loop, that is Girrakool — a separate picnic area with its own lock time. Stacking both is a full morning, not a 20-minute add-on.

What to expect on the ground

Day shape: picnic area → formed track with many steps through rainforest → lookout stops on three cascade levels → bottom of the falls → return the same way. Official planning figures: 0.8 km return, 30–36 minutes, Grade 3. Always verify live on the NPWS track page.

After rain the falls are spectacular and the steps are slick. In dry spells the cascade is quieter but the rainforest setting still earns the stop. Summer spray is real; summer heat on the climb out is also real.

Crowds concentrate on weekends, public holidays and the first fine day after rain. Early starts or weekdays feel more like a national park and less like a car-park contest.

Start, finish, bail-outs

Start and finish at Somersby Falls picnic area. Vehicle entry fee applies ($8 per vehicle per day at machines or Park’nPay; annual NSW Parks Pass accepted — confirm the live amount on NSW National Parks). Facilities at the start: toilets, BBQs, picnic tables, drinking water, accessible parking.

Opening hours for this picnic area: 7am–8pm daylight saving, 7am–6pm at other times. The car park is locked at close. Staying too long at the bottom of the falls is how people get locked in — know when you need to start back up.

Bail-outs are honest: turn around at any lookout. There is no shuttle from the bottom. The only way out is the steps you came down.

Hazards, reverse rules, pairing

Key hazards: many steps, short steep hills, slippery when wet, some obstacles. No snow, no crocodiles, no 4WD requirement for this node. Cultural respect still applies park-wide — do not leave the formed track for “better angles” on rock platforms that may hold engravings elsewhere in the park.

Official visitor info notes limited mobile reception in parts of the park. 000 needs reception. Download Emergency+ before you visit; screenshot NPWS alerts. A sat messenger is optional planning for longer Great North Walk days — not a Somersby Falls picnic requirement. Do not invent carrier coverage maps.

Girrakool Loop can fit the same morning if you leave early and respect both closing times. Somersby plus a forced Mt Wondabyne summit on a hot afternoon usually does not. Turn around if bottles are empty, steps are slick, a child has stopped drinking, or you have 90 minutes to closing. Planning from official NPWS track notes (checked 22 Aug 2026), not a trip diary.

Grip shoes, water and a rain shell matter on sandstone steps — kit searches live on the gear hub, not as an Amazon wall on this walk page.

Extra tips

  • Best after rain for full flow; cool spray is the summer reason people come — still wear grip shoes.
  • Weekdays and school-term mornings are quieter than Sunday after rain.
  • Picnic tables, BBQs, toilets and drinking water are at the start — not down the steps.
  • No wheelchair access on the walking track (NPWS). Picnic area has accessible parking/facilities — confirm on the official picnic page.
  • Wildlife: water dragons, frogs, goannas, brush turkeys; lyrebirds possible early. Do not feed wildlife.
