Brisbane Water is close enough to Sydney to tempt a late start and far enough for the M1 to punish it. Official nearby-town figures put Gosford about 10 km and Sydney city about 72 km. Your clock will be traffic, not the map.

Pick one main walk. Picnic lock times are part of the drive plan, not a footnote. Limited mobile reception in parts of the park means Emergency+ and screenshots before you leave signal.

This is unofficial planning for a Sydney or Central Coast calendar day — not a brochure that pretends you can do Somersby, Girrakool, Piles Creek and Wondabyne before the M1 clogs on Sunday evening.

What fits a Sydney day

That usually fits: Somersby Falls plus picnic, or Girrakool Loop plus lunch, or two lookouts. That usually does not, on a first visit leaving the city after 9:30am Saturday: Wondabyne–Patonga plus Somersby plus Piles Creek.

Overnight instead

Gosford, Kariong, Somersby, Woy Woy, Umina, Terrigal — towns with beds. Official park camping is limited — check NPWS. This site never takes a cut from camping bookings.

The M1 buffer

Allow roughly 70–90+ minutes each way by car via the M1, then Wisemans Ferry Road (Somersby / Girrakool) or Woy Woy Road (Patonga). Weekend and holiday peaks are the real time cost. Leave a reverse buffer so you are not choosing between lock time and Sydney traffic in the same hour.

What to skip on a late start

Leaving the city after 9:30am Saturday: skip Wondabyne–Patonga, skip stacking Piles Creek onto Somersby, skip “we’ll just add Girrakool because it is nearby.” Nearby is still a second car park and a second lock clock.

How far is it really?

Official nearby-town figures put Sydney city about 72 km and Gosford about 10 km. Your clock is M1 traffic — allow 70–90+ minutes each way and a reverse buffer.
