Somersby Falls after rain: flow vs slippery steps

When Somersby Falls is at its best, how lock times and Grade 3 steps change the plan, and when to turn around.

Somersby Falls is the reason most people search this park. After rain the three cascade levels look like the brochure. That is also when the formed track’s many steps get slick and the car park fills before brunch.

This is unofficial planning: how to enjoy the spray without getting locked in, sliding on sandstone, or treating 800 metres as a promenade.

Official figures stay short: 0.8 km return, Grade 3, picnic lock at close. The failure modes are longer: fashion sneakers, a late M1 start, and no reverse clock. Verify the track page and alerts the morning you go.

The official walking track is 0.8 km return, 30–36 minutes, Grade 3, starting at Somersby Falls picnic area. Lookouts take in three levels of cascading waterfalls. The picnic area is open 7am–8pm daylight saving or 7am–6pm otherwise. Vehicle day-entry fees apply.

The track is not wheelchair accessible. Facilities (toilets, BBQs, water) sit at the picnic area, not at the bottom of the falls.

After-rain decision

Go if you have grip shoes, a weekday or early start, and a plan to leave before closing. Stay at the picnic area if anyone cannot do stairs, if you would arrive after 11am on a public holiday, or if fire danger / alerts say the park is closed.

Failure mode: starting down with 45 minutes to lock time because the falls “look close”. The only way out is the steps you came down.

Who should stay at the picnic area

Anyone who cannot handle Grade 3 stairs. Anyone arriving with less than an honest hour to lock time. Anyone in smooth-soled shoes after rain. The picnic area still has tables, BBQs, toilets and rainforest setting — that can be the whole visit.

The walking track is not wheelchair accessible. Accessible parking and facilities are at the picnic area — confirm on the official picnic page, not from a photo of the bottom cascade.

Pairing without wrecking the clock

Girrakool Loop can fit the same morning if you left Sydney early and respect both lock times. They are separate car parks. Do not add Mt Wondabyne or a full Piles Creek after a slick after-rain Somersby.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

How much is entry?

$8 per vehicle per day at machines or Park’nPay; NSW Parks Pass accepted. Confirm live on NSW National Parks. This site never affiliates park fees.

Can I swim?

Treat the falls as a lookout walk, not a swimming hole. Rocks are slippery; official pages emphasise walking and picnic, not a managed swim beach.
